As a writer, I feel there is merit to exploring my own psyche, however, this project wasn’t an unprompted pursuit. God knows I already have a lot on my plate. But these dreams I keep having… I can’t ignore them anymore. They started approximately a month ago. Around the solstice if I remember correctly. It was one of those dreams that you can’t tell from reality. All I knew was an impending sense of dread and symbols that repeated over and over.
A warm breeze swept over the slated tiles of suburbia housing. The golden glow of sunlight doused sections of the road I walked in pools of shadow. It seemed to stretch on beyond me for miles, sloping down towards a great park, decorated of sporadic patches of trees. It was late. I was late. How long had I been running for? It didn’t matter, I could feel it chasing me.
Then it was night and I was there, in the park. Of course, I’d found it after all, X-Marks the spot. Well, I thought it was an ‘X’ branded there, marked in candlelight. Something like that. I fixed my collar, brushed a hand through my hair and then sucked in a breath. It was coming.
Every dream since has been a variation of that. Sometimes it's a different mark, sometimes it’s like a hieroglyph, alien and beyond human capability. Most times, however, it was akin to an ellipsis. That’s where I start. I need to find the meaning behind these marks.
I’ll sleep on it for now, I have an early shift tomorrow.
